Silver shades of Africa
There’s something to be said about the everlasting quality of monochrome images. Each time I go to Africa, the rich shadows and tones in each scene beg for a filmic capture from a bygone era. In this project, I’ve attempted to showcase the timeless quality of Africa’s wildlife through a series of monochrome images.
It’s easy to get obsessed with monochrome imagery. Accuracy isn’t the goal. The lack of colour is a constraint and a freedom in equal measure. So once you start rendering monochromes, it’s hard to stop.
Each time I revisit a scene from Africa, I find it hard to ignore how privileged I’ve been to experience those sights. Wake me up in the middle of the night, point me to one of those images, and I’ll be able to relive that moment as if it happened yesterday. But of course, it wasn’t yesterday!
Visiting Africa is a transformative experience. Every scene is awe-inspiring. The landscapes take your breath away. Two-dimensional images barely do justice to the beauty of this continent. Yet we try and fail. In that iterative cycle, we live a wee bit more.
